Who We Are

Our History

The Ignite Training Center, Inc. is a mission-driven 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in Cincinnati, Ohio, dedicated to closing the digital divide and expanding pathways to economic mobility through accessible, high-quality information technology education. By serving qualifying adults in historically underserved communities, Ignite equips participants with the technical skills, industry-recognized credentials, and career readiness needed to compete in today’s technology-driven economy.

Founded by Alphonso Washington, a U.S. Air Force veteran and information technology professional with more than twenty years of leadership and technical experience, The Ignite Training Center is grounded in both subject-matter expertise and a deep commitment to service. Washington’s background includes military service as a Combat Mobility Rigger and work supporting Special Operations Technologies in Afghanistan. His vision for Ignite is to cultivate a skilled, culturally responsive, and opportunity-driven workforce prepared to contribute to the nation’s technology infrastructure and to the long-term prosperity of their communities.

The Challenge

The IT Skill Gap in America

Communities in Cincinnati and other urban centers continue to experience significant inequities in access to digital skills training, workforce preparation, and technology-enabled opportunity. These disparities are especially acute in low-income neighborhoods, where residents often face multiple barriers to participating in today’s labor market. Regional digital inclusion efforts have documented ongoing challenges related to broadband affordability, access to appropriate devices, and digital literacy—factors that directly affect a resident’s ability to pursue employment, education, and career advancement.

The following indicators underscore the urgency of this need:

  • In underserved neighborhoods like 45206 (Walnut Hills), 45225 (Camp Washington/West End), 45229 (Avondale), and 45237 (Bond Hill/Roselawn), unemployment and underemployment rates remain significantly higher than the citywide average, while access to tech education remains limited.
  • Digital literacy in these zip codes ranks among the lowest in Hamilton County, despite the city’s growing tech job market that remains largely untapped by local talent.
  • The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects over 377,500 new IT support specialist jobs by 2032, yet many residents in Cincinnati’s underserved communities are not positioned to compete for these roles due to a lack of training and certification.

Our Solution

The Ignite Center’s comprehensive program model includes:

  • Instructor-led IT Training Tracks in hardware, cybersecurity, scripting, AI learning, and productivity software
  • Soft Skills & Career Coaching to ensure readiness for real-world employment
  • Mentorship and Networking with certified IT professionals and industry leaders
  • Certifications and Employer Partnerships for direct employment pipelines
  • Women in Tech Initiative to address gender disparities in STEM fields

Participants complete the program with more than technical knowledge. They leave with industry-relevant credentials, practical experience, increased confidence, and the professional support systems needed to pursue sustainable employment and long-term career advancement.

The Broader Impact

The anticipated impact of this work extends beyond individual participants to strengthen families, neighborhoods, and the regional workforce ecosystem:

  • Improved workforce readiness to meet local employer demand
  • Greater digital literacy among families and communities
  • Reduced unemployment and reliance on public assistance
  • Increased representation of marginalized populations in tech careers

Our Vision

The Ignite Center stands as a beacon of hope and opportunity for underserved communities in Cincinnati and beyond. We are positioned to serve the American workforce with our vision of building a robust pipeline of certified IT administrators and professionals who are equipped to support U.S.-based businesses and government agencies, while also revitalizing the economic fabric of their own neighborhoods.

We believe in the unseen invididual talent that is presently at rest, waiting to be awaken by a spark and opportunity to contribute to the greater good. We believe that talent is widely distributed, but opportunity is not. Through structured technical training, career preparation, and targeted support services, Ignite helps unlock the potential of individuals who are ready to pursue meaningful, long-term careers in technology. By expanding access to rigorous, industry-aligned education, The Ignite Center will play a critical role in:

  • Bridging digital and opportunity divides
  • Empowering workforce readiness
  • Supporting economic mobility
  • Increasing American representation in the tech industry
  • Building an onshore talent pipeline to strengthen the nation’s technical workforce infrastructure
